Sharp drop in unemployment claims

The National Insurance Institute today reported a sharp 14.5% drop in the number of unemployment claims to a monthly average of 75,832 in 2010 from a monthly average of 88,659 claims in 2009. The monthly average of new claims fell 18% to 14,627 in 2010 from 17,820 in 2009.

The drop in unemployment claims was continuous throughout 2010. The number of claims fell from 85,000 in January to 72,500 in December. The drop in the number of new unemployment claims began in the second half of the year, falling from 19,000 in June to 13,500 in December.

National Insurance Institute director general Esther Dominici said that the drop in the number of unemployment claims is a clear sign of economic recovery and emergence from the recession, and it was to be hoped that the improvement in the jobs market would continue.
